Frequently Asked Questions

As costs are involved in every stage of the publication process, from administrating peer review to copy-editing and hosting the final article on dedicated servers, indexing and promoting it, authors are asked to pay an article processing charge (APC) in order for their article to be published open access under a Creative Commons licence. The animal family of journals are published Gold Open Access.

APCs are an alternative business model to traditional subscription fees, all content is openly and freely (open access) available for anybody to read and download.

The animal APC is competitive with journals in the market place. animal is a quality journal with an impact factor of 3.730 (2020 – 3.240), ranking 8/63 in the Agriculture, Dairy & Animal Science category (previously 9/63) and 10/144 in the Veterinary Science Category (previously 15/146).

The APC rate in place at the time of submission is the charge that will be levied.

The British Society of Animal Science (BSAS) and the European Federation of Animal Science (EAAP) membership enables 15% discount, to the corresponding author that is a member, on the publishing process charge for animal. BSAS and EAAP discounts will be applicable for articles submitted from 1st January 2023. If you are not currently a member of either organisation, you can apply for membership to your preferred association using the links below. If the status of your submission is ‘With Editor’, it means that the Editor is still looking for the first reviewer to agree to review. It does not mean that the Editor has not taken any action. In case of doubt, you may send a message to the Editor via Editorial Manager asking for explanations.

If the status of your submission is ‘Under review’, it means that the peer-review process is still ongoing. Possibly, the editor is looking for a second reviewer.

If the status of your submission is ‘Required Reviews Complete’, it means that 2 review reports have been secured, but that the Editor may be expecting a third review report. In case of doubt, you may send a message to the Editor via Editorial Manager asking for explanations.
